Tim Galway says:
“Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It’s helping them to learn rather than teaching them”
It’s a great definition.
As social media managers and experts we’re often asked to coach others within our team, indeed we can often find ourselves coaching ourselves.
When we do we need to use the tried and tested “GROW” model:
- G for Goal setting: define the short- and long-term goals
- R for Reality: explore the current situation
- O for Options: identify and evaluate different action strategies
- W for Will: what will you do by when?
In social media we definitely do most of these but when it comes to “W” we have an advantage over most coaching environments – we can automatically track specific metrics.
In 2018 I’ve set myself a goal to increase my twitter follower base and I am aiming to hit 3000 followers by the end of January.
To track myself I’ve set up a Twitter Follower count scorecard that will ping me each week showing how I’m doing:
Because I like a bit of healthy competition I’ll be comparing myself against others like me (including in this case MarketMe itself!).
You can copy what I did:
What will be interesting will be to see whether this approach of creating a scorecard to keep me to my objective keeps me focused on increasing my follower count in 2018. (I will report back here!)
I think if I was coaching anyone, or just trying to self improve, making sure people have the right scorecard to track progress against their stated objectives seems a no-brainer.
After all, what gets scored gets done!
