Today we have a lot of choice when it comes to wine from popping to the local supermarket to the wine merchants and of course we now have the internet that gives us ample choice and ease when ordering wine.
What about Champagne? The king of wines and usually what we think to be one of the most expensive wines on the market – Just how do you go about choosing the best wine for your money?
Some basic key points to consider should be:
- Know the difference between all the styles of sparkling wines and be very aware that not all that is fizzy is a Champagne, you also have less expensive options such as Prosecco, Cava and Cremants along with more pricey options such as English Sparkling Wine and Franciacorta.
- What style of Champagne will you enjoy the most such as fruity, dry and vintage as each is very different and you will also have to understand descriptive words on bottles such a Brut, Extra Brut, Blanc de Noirs etc.
- There is more to Champagne than just Moet et Chandon and Veuve Clicquot with thousands of other Champagne labels / names to try from other big names such as Pol Roger, Dom Perignon and Lanson to smaller family grower labels.
- Prices of Champagne vary tremendously and it is not always down to price determining quality, many times you will be paying for the name / design of bottle over quality of Champagne and sometimes a lesser known label can offer a far better tasting experience than one of the big named Champagnes.
